Written from what Chapters does today, in plain words. By using Chapters you agree to these terms and to our privacy notice.
Not yet reviewed by a lawyer. We are publishing these terms anyway, because a service with no terms is worse than one with honest ones. If anything here matters to you, ask us and we will answer plainly rather than pointing at a clause.
What Chapters is
Chapters is an invitation-only travel service for two people. Each of you answers a set of questions; from both sets we draw your shape, shortlist three places, and write an edition: the reasoning and the days behind each place. For a place you choose, we plan the trip and, if you ask, request the hotel room on your behalf. Chapters is a planning service. It does not operate flights, hotels, restaurants or tours, and it is not a party to any contract you make with one.
Hotel bookings and the agency of record
Hotel bookings are placed through Fora Travel, Inc., California seller of travel registration CST #2151995-50, the travel agency of record for every room Chapters requests. A room is requested only when one of you asks for it, and it is booked only when a founder confirms it with the hotel. The hotel pays Chapters a commission on a booking placed this way; you pay the hotel’s own rate, never more because the booking came through us. Chapters never holds your card: when a hotel needs one, it asks you for it through its own link, under its own terms.
The design fee
Chapters charges no design fee today. The quiz, your shape, your three places and the edition cost nothing, and we take no card details.
When a design fee is introduced it will be $350, and we will say so on this page before it applies. The fee is due when you choose to keep an edition without booking its hotel through us. Book that hotel through us within 90 days and the fee comes back in full the day the hotel confirms; after 90 days with nothing booked, we keep it. It pays for our own work and is never a deposit against a hotel stay.
Cancelling a booking
Until the hotel confirms, you can withdraw a request at no cost. Once a founder confirms the booking, you can cancel it free for 24 hours from the hour of that confirmation; we show you the exact deadline. After those 24 hours the hotel’s own cancellation policy applies.
The hotel’s terms apply
Every stay is governed by the hotel’s own terms, rates, taxes, deposits and cancellation policy, which we pass on to you as the hotel states them. A table, a tour or a ticket we arrange is likewise governed by that house’s own terms. Where our words and the hotel’s confirmation differ, the confirmation is the record.
Mira
Mira, the concierge in the companion, is AI. It can be wrong, out of date, or miss a detail that matters to you, so confirm anything important, such as an address, an opening hour, an allergy you told a kitchen about, or a booking, with the place itself. Mira never books, changes or spends without your yes, and no table is confirmed until the house confirms it.
Accounts
You sign in by a link sent to your email; there is no password. Keep that inbox yours, and tell us at once if you think someone else has used your account. One person, one account, and you must be an adult to hold one. You can erase your account yourself from your account page on the web or the Account screen in the app; what that removes and what stays, de-identified, is set out in the privacy notice. We may close an account that is used to abuse the service, another person, or a hotel.
Your edition
The edition and the plan we write for you are yours to keep and to use for your own trip. They remain Chapters’ work otherwise: please do not republish or resell them.
What we do not promise
Chapters is provided as is and as available. We make no warranty, express or implied, that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that a place, a rate or a table will be available when you book, or that a plan will suit you; every implied warranty, including merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, is disclaimed to the fullest extent the law allows. Prices, availability, opening hours and travel conditions change after we write, and are outside our control. Nothing we write is medical, legal or safety advice: an allergy, a pregnancy or a mobility need is something to confirm with the place itself.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Chapters and its founders are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive loss, or for any loss of enjoyment, bookings, data or profit, arising from your use of Chapters or from any trip we helped plan, however caused. Our total liability to you for all claims together is limited to the amount you paid Chapters in the twelve months before the claim or, if you paid us nothing, one hundred dollars. Nothing in these terms limits a liability that cannot be limited by law, and some places do not allow the limits above, so some may not apply to you.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of California, without regard to its conflict of law rules, and any dispute is heard in the state or federal courts sitting in San Francisco, California. Before either of us goes to court, we agree to write to each other and try, in good faith, to settle it within thirty days.
Changes to these terms
When we change these terms we update this page and its date, and where the change matters we tell you before it applies to you. Continuing to use Chapters after a change means you accept it.
